Our Story

Imagine this: It’s December 1985, and our very own CR Smith stumbles upon something truly extraordinary – Georgia Midnight. This gem is as magical as it sounds, containing more elements than you can imagine.

The History of “Georgia Midnight”

Picture this: deep in the earth’s interior, liquid magma slowly cools. One particular spot is infused with minute amounts of precious metals and other elements. As the magma cools, minerals begin to form in segregated zones or families, due to factors like temperature, cooling rate, pressure, and element availability. During this early magmatic stage, darker minerals solidify first, pushing out excess metals into available spaces between them. This unique formation process resulted in a gem-rich zone we now call “Georgia Midnight.”

“Georgia Midnight” was first discovered protruding slightly through an overburden that had been weathering away for millions of years. Closer observation revealed seven boulders lying in the shape of an arrow or a right angle. Standing at the center between the two leg ends and pointing towards the apex where the legs met directed you to the North Star. One side seemed to parallel the trend of “Georgia Midnight.” Perhaps early inhabitants heated the material to extract malleable metals for tools.

But what’s even more amazing? CR’s knack for discovering Mother Nature’s best-kept secrets and turning them into dazzling works of art.

CR Smith’s Legacy

CR’s superpower isn’t just discovering gems; it’s also teaching. He’s a rockstar at passing on his knowledge. From classroom sessions to art classes, he’s inspired over 100 budding jewelers to pick, cut, and design like pros. Oh, and did we mention he’s designed over 600 settings in his lifetime? Talk about talent!

But here’s the thing about CR – he’s not just about rocks and gems. He’s a bona fide rockhound who’s been chasing Aquamarine dreams for decades. Even during his days as a fighter pilot in the US Navy, his passion for gemology burned bright. It all started with an article about the Gemmological Society of Great Britain, and the rest, as they say, is history.
